If you look at most of the tutorials on Instagram you’ll see an initial tracing without any gridlines. You can go wrong at the peripherals or fade it out and leave it as a sketch. ![]() The eyes are the heart and soul of the subject and in a way, the rest is padding. I also like to start with the most interesting part. You may as well do the hardest part first, and if you screw up, you can start again without investing too much time in the project. I start with the most important feature because if that goes wrong there is no way I can save the picture. Only then did I draw the eyes in more detail. Then I mapped the facial features, readjusting the basic shapes until everything was in proportion. I drew the general shape of the head as my starting point, not in detail, just as a sketch. Why? because they are the main focus of the picture. I’m always asked where I start first, and as I draw animals, I always start with the eyes. In reality, it makes little difference if the focal length is longer. If you take your own shots, and I think that’s best, use a 50mm lens and that is near enough the same as the human eye. If the vertical lines curve towards the center, they need correcting. Your brain can sometimes play tricks and it’s not always apparent that the image is wrong. There is nothing illegal about that if you are just practicing.Ĭhoose a subject that inspires you. You can take screenshots of photos that interest you. I use my own references but you don’t have to go that far at the beginning. If I was drawing a cat, for example, it would be easier to draw plain fur, without the spots or stripes.
